The undergraduate teacher education programs at Northeastern University are unique in that they are in an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences, but with strong ties to the vibrant urban community that surrounds the university. Students, faculty, and other friends feel and participate in the energy of creating teacher preparation programs that are relatively new and consciously different.
Our urban commitment permeates every aspect of the teacher preparation process. All of our students' field experiences and student teaching happen in Boston, beginning with the first course our undergraduates take, appropriately named Education in the Community. Every student in this course spends 30 hours in one of our partner community education agencies, tutoring and supporting the urban youth these agencies. In the first 5 years of the program's existence, these students provided over 20,000 hours of service to our community.
Our Arts and Sciences home means that our students are content experts. Every undergraduate in the Urban Education Program has a major in one of the arts and sciences disciplines. Those in the combined BA/BS-MAT program, take graduate courses in their majors and/or related fields. In addition, most of our faculty members have their primary appointments in other arts and sciences departments. Mastering a subject in-depth is at the heart of the teacher preparation process at Northeastern University.
As you examine this web site, consider it an invitation to participate in the life of this lively and deeply engaged community of students and teachers. Our community includes not only the faculty and students of the university but also our school and community partners' teachers and administrators in Boston's schools and leaders in Boston's community agencies as well as the students who participate in their programs. Together, all of us are committed to learning the skills and sharing the practices and beliefs that will ensure the educational success of tomorrow's young people.
