Description: Students are assigned to various community agencies sponsoring after-school programs. This opportunity allows students to learn about children, schooling, families, and Boston's urban community. Students may receive special training for tutoring and teaching, and participate in literacy and enrichment activities.
Location: Various community out-of-school programs.
Time: One semester, approximately three hours per week, 20-30 hours during the semester.
Inquiry into Literacy, Numeracy and Science

Description: Students work in urban schools, observing and assisting individual or small groups of students in literacy, numeracy and science fields. This is a structured opportunity for students to learn by doing and relate learning theory, school culture, and a sense of community to students in a school setting. Students also may assist whole school activities; for example, work in the computer lab or homework after-school center. Students may also be project focused, such as the school newspaper, math team, science fair, or any other appropriate school activity.
Locations: Mission Hill (K-8), Tobin (K-8), Josiah Quincy Elementary (K-5), Trotter Elementary (K-5), O'Bryant High School of Mathematics and Science (7-12), and Health Careers Academy (9-12). Community sites or other urban schools can be approved.
Time: One semester, approximately two-three hours per week, 20-30 hours during the semester/
Language, Cultural and Literacy in Middle and High Schools

Description: Northeastern students work in partner schools in Boston with individual or small groups of students to observe the literacy challenges they face. Through structured assignments, NU students work with middle and high school students to support increased competencies in all content areas and learn how to create a literacy rich environment in 9-12 classrooms.

Teaching in the Disciplines: Mathematics, Science, English, or History

Description: Northeastern students work in partner schools in Boston with individual or small groups of students who are studying the content areas they intend to teach. NU students have the opportunity to observe how teachers establish positive classroom environments and the variety of teaching styles used in their discipline. Through field experiences students connect educational theory as developed in courses with the application of these ideas in K12 settings.
