Student Teaching
The School of Education has built strong partnerships with K12 schools and community organizations in Boston. These partnership help to achieve the schools mission:
-
To prepare community dedicated teachers who support the academic success and personal development of children and youth in diverse urban environments.
In coursework prior to student teaching, all students complete 75 hours of field experiences in K12 classrooms in these schools and community organizations. These experiences provide a rich complement to the coursework in the program and serve to help prepare students for full time student teaching.
Student teaching is designed to support students' development of their teaching pedagogy. Student teaching focuses on demonstrating in an urban classroom the Massachusetts and Northeastern standards on teaching and learning. Students are placed in cohorts in Boston Public Schools and are assisted by a cooperating teacher, a Northeastern supervisor, a seminar instructor and their peers.
Student teaching placements and seminar assignments meet the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' licensure requirements. With successful completion of Student teaching, students are eligible to be endorsed by Northeastern University for initial licensure.
To be eligible for Student teaching, students must have:- Completed all licensure courses listed in the Program of Study
- Earned a 3.0 QPA in all coursework
- Passed the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure in Communication and Literacy Skills (reading and writing) and Subject area(s)
- Completed 75 hours of fieldwork in a minimum of two sites.
Under the BA, BA/BS-MAT* or MAT program, students teach in one of a number of Boston Public Schools with which the School of Education has partnered. During student teaching students are expected to be full time in a school during the entire student teaching semester. In addition to demonstrating their skills as a new teacher, students are expected to demonstrate professional standards, which include daily attendance, punctuality, appropriate attire, professional behavior, and a positive and respectful attitude toward the school community. A seminar for student teachers meets weekly during the semester to provide the opportunity for students to reflect on their teaching experience and develop the skills and knowledge to become exceptional community teachers.
*The BA/BS-MAT program requires work in schools for 3 days per week in the Fall and full time in the Spring. See program descriptions above.
This intense practicum experience leads to a Massachusetts Department of Education teacher licensure at the initial level.
Careful attention to field experiences demonstrates our commitment to the development of our students' success in demonstrating the Professional Teacher Standards and to each of our student's having a positive teaching and learning experience.
